What is a Call to Action?
A call to action (CTA) is an instruction that prompts the visitor to take a specific action: click, request, buy or download. A strong CTA is the bridge between interest and conversion, and one of the most impactful elements in CRO.
What makes a CTA effective?
An effective CTA is specific, action-oriented and benefit-driven. “Request free advice” works better than “Click here”. Use the first person for a higher conversion rate: “Start my free trial” performs better than “Start your free trial”. Make sure the CTA is visible above the fold and repeated after every persuasive section.
CTA placement
Place the primary CTA prominently at the top of the landing page. In ads (Google Ads, Meta Ads) the CTA is the last step before the click, so make it urgent and specific.
Testing CTAs
Always test several CTA variants with A/B tests. Small changes in text, colour or placement can significantly affect the conversion rate. Use heatmaps to see whether visitors notice the CTA.
How many CTAs can a page have?
One primary CTA per page. Several secondary CTAs are fine, but they must not push the primary one aside or cause confusion.
Does a CTA button work better than a text link?
Usually, yes: buttons are visually more prominent and make the desired action clearer. More at developers.google.com/search.
