What is a Unique Visitor?

A unique visitor is an individual user who has visited a website one or more times within a certain period. Unique visitors are identified through a cookie or device ID and are counted only once in the reporting period, regardless of the number of sessions.

Unique visitors versus sessions

One unique visitor can generate several sessions. If someone visits your site on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, they count as one unique visitor but three sessions. Unique visitors measure your actual audience; sessions measure engagement and how often people return.

Unique visitors in GA4

In Google Analytics 4 these are called “users”. GA4 distinguishes between new and returning users. Because of cookie restrictions and privacy settings, the measurement is less accurate than it used to be, so GA4 uses modelling techniques to fill in missing data.

Unique visitors as a KPI

Unique visitors are a good measure of brand reach and audience growth. Always combine them with conversion rate and bounce rate to judge the quality of the traffic as well as the volume.

Are unique visitors the same as unique users?

Yes, in GA4 the term “users” is the standard. Both concepts measure the same thing: the number of unique individuals.

Does incognito mode count as a new unique visitor?

Usually it does, because no cookie is stored. More at developers.google.com/search.
