What is an Algorithm?

An algorithm is a set of rules a platform uses to decide which content is shown to which user, and in what order. On social media the algorithm determines your organic reach; in search engines it determines your position in the SERP.

How does a social media algorithm work?

Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn rank content based on engagement, relevance to the individual user, recency and the strength of the relationship between creator and viewer. Posts that quickly get lots of comments and shares are shown to more people, which creates a flywheel effect.

The Google search algorithm

The Google search algorithm uses more than 200 ranking factors to determine the order of the organic search results. Core principles are E-E-A-T, relevance to the search intent, page quality and backlinks. Core Updates can shift positions significantly.

Algorithm changes

Google regularly rolls out Core Updates that can affect SEO positions. Social media platforms change their algorithms all the time; the emphasis keeps shifting towards video and high engagement as a quality signal.

Can I manipulate the algorithm?

Short-term hacks work for a while, but lead to penalties or weaker organic performance. Lasting quality and real engagement are the only reliable long-term strategy.

How do I respond to algorithm changes?

Focus on user experience and on creating real value for your audience. More at developers.google.com/search.
