ROXTAR - Online marketing

Online marketing for psychologists

Online marketing for psychology practices is rarely about more sign-ups, and more often about the right ones. With waiting lists and limited spots, you want to be found for the issues you specialize in, in your own service area, with a sign-up route that handles carefully what people leave behind.

“I already have a waiting list, why would I do marketing?” It is the reaction we hear most often from this field. And it is a good question.

The answer: a full schedule is not the same as the right schedule. Below you can read when marketing for a psychology practice does make sense, when it does not, and what it costs.

Why market while you have a waiting list?

Mental healthcare is full. Yet practices invest in visibility, and there are three good reasons for that.

You want clients who fit you

If you work with a specialization (trauma, EMDR, anxiety, young adults), you want those sign-ups. A waiting list full of general sign-ups you then have to refer on mainly costs you administrative time. Being findable in a targeted way for your specialism gives you a waiting list that fits.

You want to be less dependent on referrers

If almost everything comes through the GP and the practice mental-health nurse, you depend on a handful of practices. If something changes there, you notice it immediately. Your own visibility makes your intake more stable.

You are considering contract-free or self-paying work

If you want to fill part of your practice outside the health insurers, you have to be found yourself. Self-paying clients do not come in via a referral; they search online.

How does someone look for a psychologist?

Search behavior in this field differs from almost any other. That calls for a different approach.

People search on the issue, not the profession

People rarely search for “psychologist”. But they do search for “help with panic attacks”, “dealing with burnout”, “EMDR [city]” or “therapy for anxiety”. Someone is looking for a solution to what they feel, not a profession.

That means a page per issue delivers more than one general page about your practice.

The orientation phase is long

Between “I think I need help” and an actual sign-up, there are often weeks to months. People read, hesitate, close the tab, come back. Content that explains what a treatment involves helps in exactly that phase, and ensures you are the one they remember.

The threshold is high

Signing up with a psychologist is not the same as requesting a quote. Everything that lowers the threshold counts: a photo of yourself, an explanation of how a first conversation goes, clarity about costs and waiting time, and a sign-up form that does not feel like an intake procedure.

What should be on your practice website?

Most psychologist websites tell you who the practitioner is. Visitors want to know whether they can come here.

The four questions you answer right away

  • Can I come here with my issue? Name the issues you work with, in plain language
  • What does it cost and is it reimbursed? State whether you have contracts with health insurers, or whether you work contract-free and what that means
  • How long is the waiting time? Keep it current. An outdated waiting time costs you trust the moment someone calls
  • What happens if I sign up? Describe the first conversation. That takes away tension

What you should not do

Promises about results. Apart from not being tenable, it does not fit the care this field requires. Calm, factual information works better here than persuasion.

Being findable locally as a psychologist

Most clients search within a reasonable travel distance, certainly for weekly sessions. That makes local findability important, even if you partly work online.

Your Google Business Profile

Fill it in completely and keep your waiting time or intake stop current. If you appear in the map block at the top for “psychologist [city]”, you are found at exactly the moment someone takes the step.

Pages per issue and per place

A page about EMDR, one about burnout support, one about anxiety, each with an explanation in plain language. If you work from multiple locations or serve a region, make that explicit.

Referrers find you online too

GPs and mental-health nurses themselves search for practices with specific expertise and current availability. A clear page about your specialisms and waiting time therefore works both ways.

What about reviews in mental healthcare?

Trickier than in other industries, and that calls for care.

Why actively asking for reviews is not appropriate

Asking a client for a public review puts pressure on a relationship not meant for it, and touches on their privacy. In most other sectors we actually advise asking actively; here we do not.

What does work

Building trust without reviews: show who you are, what your training and registration are, and how you work. A personal text and a normal photo do more here than stars. Client experience surveys you already conduct can be shown anonymized and aggregated, which is different from collecting individual reviews.

What does online marketing for a psychology practice cost?

At ROXTAR the rates are as follows:

What does SEO cost per month?

From 495 euros per month. For a practice with one or two practitioners you usually stay close to that amount: you focus on a limited number of issues and one service area. Larger practices with multiple locations and specialisms sit higher.

What does a website cost?

From 1,495 euros for a starter website. For a psychology practice the top end is rarely needed. What does count: a secure sign-up form and careful handling of data, because you process special personal data.

When is it not worth it?

If your practice is structurally full of clients who fit you well, and you have no ambition to grow or shift to self-paying work? Then marketing delivers little. We would rather say that beforehand than afterwards.

How do I get more clients as a psychologist?

People search on their issue and on waiting time, not on your school of thought. So be clear about what someone can come to you for, how soon they can be seen and how reimbursement works. Those three things at the top of your site answer exactly what a searcher wants to know before getting in touch.

Frequently asked questions about marketing for psychologists

Does marketing make sense if I already have a waiting list?

That depends on what is on that list. If it consists of sign-ups that do not fit your specialism and you have to refer on, targeted visibility gives you a better match and saves administrative time. If you are full of clients who fit exactly, there is little to gain.

May I, as a registered care provider, simply advertise?

Advertising is allowed, but stricter rules apply to care providers than to ordinary service providers, including around claims about results and the use of client experiences. Keep it factual and informative, and check your professional association guidelines if in doubt.

What should I be findable for: my profession or my specialism?

Your specialism and the issues you work with. People rarely search for “psychologist”; they search for what they experience, such as panic, burnout or trauma. A page per issue therefore delivers more than one general practice page.

Should I put my rates and waiting time on the site?

Yes. Both are decisive for someone orienting themselves, and it saves you calls from people you cannot help anyway. Keep the waiting time current; an outdated figure harms your credibility at exactly the wrong moment.

Can I ask clients for a review?

We advise against it. It puts pressure on the treatment relationship and touches on your client privacy. Build trust instead with a personal practice page, clarity about your registration and approach, and possibly anonymized outcomes of client experience surveys.

How quickly does it deliver sign-ups?

Ads work within days, but are rarely the starting point in this field. SEO and a well-set-up Business Profile need three to six months. Because clients own orientation phase also takes weeks to months, this is a long-haul effort, and that fits the profession.

That Business Profile is also free and delivers a lot in this field. Read more about it at Google Business Profile, and about being found in your own city at local SEO.
