Online marketing for plumbers

Online marketing for plumbers is all about the moment someone has a problem. When there is a leak, nobody searches for your company name; they search for your service plus their town, and they call one of the first three results. Ranking at the top of that map pack matters more here than a beautiful website.

A blocked drain at half past seven in the evening. A leak coming through the ceiling. At that moment nobody compares three quotes; people call the first plumber who picks up.

That is what online marketing for plumbers comes down to: being at the top the moment things go wrong. Below you can read how that works, why this trade follows different rules than most, and what it costs.

Emergencies are your most valuable customers

Look at what people actually type. In the Netherlands there are around 300 searches a month for “emergency plumber” and 250 for “plumber near me”. Those are not people orienting themselves; those are people with water on the floor.

Why those customers are worth so much

With emergency requests price hardly matters, and the margin is higher than on planned work. Nobody negotiates, and the job usually goes into your calendar the same day. One extra emergency job a week is, for most one-person businesses, the difference between a mediocre and a good month.

What counts in that situation

Three things, in this order: are you in the map pack at the top of Google, do you answer the phone, and can you come today. Whoever says yes to all three wins the job. The most beautiful website in the world loses to a competitor who picks up.

Your Google Business Profile matters more than your website

With an emergency, someone grabs their phone and searches “plumber near me”. At the top a card appears with three companies, complete with a call button. For many of those searchers the search ends right there; they never click through to a website.

What that profile should contain

  • Your service area, not just the town you are based in
  • Opening hours including evenings and weekends if you are reachable then, because that is exactly when most emergencies come in
  • Photos of your van, your team and finished work
  • Your services listed separately: leaks, drain unblocking, boiler, bathroom
  • Recent reviews, because that is what people select on

The call button is your conversion

For a plumber a phone call is the conversion, not a form. Make sure your number can be called with one tap everywhere, and measure how many calls come out of your profile. That is the number that counts.

You actually serve two markets

Emergency work and planned work call for different marketing. Whoever mixes the two does both half.

Emergency: visibility and availability

Here you win on being findable at the moment itself. A complete Google Business Profile, strong local visibility for “plumber [town]” and a phone that gets answered. Content and polished copy barely matter; speed does.

Planned work: trust and information

A bathroom renovation or replacing a boiler is a considered purchase. People request several quotes, read up on brands and prices, and take weeks over it. Here informative pages do work: what a new boiler costs, the difference between types, how long a bathroom renovation takes.

Why that second segment makes your business stable

Emergency work is erratic and seasonal. Planned work you can schedule, and it fills your quiet weeks. A plumber who runs on emergencies alone has a calendar he does not control.

Be open about your call-out costs

There are around 150 searches a month for “plumber costs”. That is a search with doubt in it: people are afraid of an unpleasant surprise.

Why transparency wins you jobs

Plumbers have a reputation, deserved or not, that you do not know in advance what it will cost. Being open about it removes exactly that doubt. State your call-out charge, your hourly rate and roughly what a common job costs.

What you gain from it

Besides trust, also calm in your calendar: you get fewer calls from people who are shocked by your rate, and more from people who know where they stand. That saves time on the phone and misunderstandings afterwards.

Reviews decide who gets called

In the card at the top of Google, three plumbers stand side by side. The difference is in the number of stars and the number of reviews.

Ask at the right moment

Right after the job is solved and the customer is relieved. Not three days later by email. A card with a QR code that you leave behind works better than the finest automated campaign.

Quantity counts as much as the score

A 4.7 with eighty reviews beats a 5.0 with four. So keep asking consistently, even when you already have a stack.

And with a bad review

Respond calmly and factually, with an offer to put it right. In this trade something goes wrong now and then; how you respond to it tells the next customer more than the score itself.

What does online marketing for a plumbing business cost?

At ROXTAR the rates work like this:

What does SEO cost per month?

From 495 euros per month. A one-person business with a single service area stays close to that figure. A company with several vans covering a whole region sits higher: then you need pages per town and per service.

What does a website cost?

From 1,495 euros for a one-pager. For a plumber the lower end is often enough. What counts is speed on mobile, a visible phone number and clarity about your service area, not extensive functionality.

What does it cost if I serve several towns?

Then you need a dedicated page per town and a Business Profile that covers your whole service area. That sits above the entry-level rate.

How do I get more customers as a plumber?

Emergencies decide a lot. Whoever has a leak calls the first one who picks up and is nearby. A complete Google Business Profile with your phone number and service area is therefore more important than anything. Reviews weigh heavily too: in the map pack people select on stars and on the number of reviews.

Frequently asked questions about marketing for plumbers

What brings in the most jobs?

A fully set-up Google Business Profile with recent reviews. With emergencies people search on mobile, see the card at the top and call directly. For many plumbers that is the most important channel, even more so than the website.

Do I even need a website as a plumber?

Yes, but not necessarily an extensive one. Your website backs up your Business Profile and is where people look for planned work, such as a bathroom or boiler. For emergencies, availability matters more than a pretty site.

Should I state my call-out costs?

We recommend it. People actively search for what a plumber costs, and openness removes doubt for those afraid of a surprise afterwards. It also saves you calls from people who drop off at your rate anyway.

Do I need to be visible in every village in my service area?

Not in every village, but in the towns your revenue comes from. Start with the three or four largest places in your area and expand once those are in place. A page per town only works if there is real content on it.

How do I get more planned work instead of only emergencies?

With informative pages about the jobs people research in advance: replacing a boiler, renovating a bathroom, pipework. Those are searches with a longer orientation, where you win trust with information.

How soon do I see results?

Optimising your Business Profile works within days. Ranking organically for “plumber [town]” takes three to six months, depending on how many colleagues are in your service area.
